Southlake Carroll wins to put itself in good spot

Team can earn title with victory

04/08/2001

AUSTIN – Southlake Carroll put itself in perfect position to capture the state high school hockey tournament with Saturday's convincing 4-1 win over Clear Lake at the Chaparral Ice Arena.

Carroll needs only one win when it returns to the ice at 10 a.m.Sunday in the final day of the double-elimination tournament. At 8 a.m. Clear Lake faces the winner of the Plano East-Arlington game, played late Saturday. The winner of that game would have to defeat Carroll in two straight games to claim the title.

"For anyone who came here two days ago, this is what they wished for," Carroll coach Laddy Tresl said.

Carroll entered the game with Clear Lake after a 2-1 win over Plano East on Saturday morning in a rematch of Thursday's Southwestern Bell High School Hockey League Championship game. Daniel Vollmer scored the winning goal with 4:27 left in the game.

Douglas Depker scored a goal in the first minute of each the first and second periods to lead Carroll to the win over Clear Lake in the night game. He scored off a rebound of Brian Jacabowski's shot 45 seconds into the game.

No rebound was necessary on Jacobowski's next shot off a pass from Guy Grivas. The wrist shot at close range rammed into the Clear Lake goal with 5:29 left in the first period. Depker scored his second goal 48 seconds into the second period off a deflection of Jeff Luther's slap shot for a 3-0 lead.

"We got a good jump in both periods," Tresl said. "That allowed us to relax and play with confidence."

Carroll outshot Clear Lake, 18-13. Carroll goalie B.J. Cotton lost a shutout, when Clear Lake's Matt Harber scored on a power play with 5:41 left in the game. Danny Force scored Carroll's final goal with 3:08 left in the game.
